A Solar Controversy Heats Up in Sungdang Myun

Despite criticism from residents, the Iksan city is moving forward with 33 solar energy plants to be constructed in Sungdang Myun.
Jeobuk province approves 33 sites for Solar Power plants near Sungdang Myun. Most residents oppose to the construction for the environmental reasons and say their opinions were not even heard in the decision process.
The issue is heating up since the angry residents are demanding that the province scrap the plan to build solar power plants.
A representative from one of the towns in Sungdang Myun said that they were just notified about the approval on solar energy plants ten days ago or so. “They should let us know before building anything in our town. It’s hard to understand why we were not informed beforehand,” said the representative. The project is on halt after the residents organized a committee to discuss the matter and began to express their concerns.
The project’s opponents claim that 9 sites would have a serious impact from solar plants installation because it could have detrimental effects on the landscape as well as dairy and poultry farms within 2 kilometer radius due to the temperature rise.
The committee had a meeting on the first and decided to submit a petition and documents which contain information on the environmental impact of Solar plants.
The administration agencies came under harsh criticism because it was not even aware of the problem until the committee was formed. The city official and the person who is in charge of the project said, “we don’t have any authority to stop the construction because provincial government approved the project already. So we are just doing our job.”
The project manager claims that the temperature around the plants are even lower during the summer when they measured. He added “the residents feel like it is going to be warmer but it actually isn’t. Our structures are completely legitimate so they would not drastically change the landscape.”
