The most senior volunteer in the Jeonbuk Province
20,000 hours in 20 years and no signs of slowing down

BoonNeo Kim(81) is the most senior member of the Boeun volunteer organization. She may be the oldest and the most warmhearted volunteer in the Jeonbuk Province. She does "sound no trumpet before" her when it comes to helping the needy.
Kim was recognized for her efforts and proclaimed "one of the best" volunteers by the Jeonbuk Governor. She spent as many as 20,000 hours volunteering and even more when it is combined with other volunteer works. This incredible and inspiring lady says that volunteering is the greatest joy in her life.
She spends Monday, Tuesday, and Friday in Hamyeol where she lives and visits Iksan on Wednesday and Thursday to volunteer at Solsolsong Soup Kitchen and Wonkwang medical center.
"It is a bit tiring for me to get up early and go to Iksan, but it feels great to volunteer and I feel energized. My work is not that hard anyway. I make some side dishes for the soup kitchen run by The Red Cross. I am very fortunate, very lucky, and very blessed."
Despite her humble comments about her effort, the work at Solsolsong soup kitchen is not that easy. It serves about 100 senior citizens in front of hot stoves. Furthermore, volunteers have to clean up after the meals are served. The work is so demanding and hard that many young volunteers do not want to work at soup kitchens.
Even though her work is hard, she never loses smile. She says, "it feels great to see people full and happy after the good meal."
Kim came to Iksan with her daughter's family from Kyungsang province. When she first moved here, she missed her home but she now enjoys her life in Iksan thanks to the volunteer work. At first, people were not very friendly to her because she was from a different part of the country but they soon accepted her as a member of the community. She made an effort to be a part of the community by serving food to people and that was the start of her long volunteering.
"I couldn't have done it if somebody had told me to volunteer. It has to come naturally. It feels great to help people and that can be a good place to start. I won't slow down until I no longer can do anything," says Kim with her signature big and warm smile on her face.
