Korea Sports Council Board of Directors announced the city's successful bid to host the 2018 99th national sports festival.
Han Soo Lee the city mayor held a press conference at a city briefing room on the 28th. He said that Iksan was chosen because iksan continued to make an effort to improve the infrastructure and foster athletes. The support and persistence paid off.
The city is planning to set up an agency that is in charge of the sports festival in order to effectively operate accommodations and improve sporting facilities and transportation. It will also be in charge of public relations, volunteers, and event security.
The lack of accommodations was the biggest concern during the vote. The mayor told the press that it will utilize Wonkwang University dorms, hotels which will be built as a part of advanced national industrial complex, and for Iksan train transfer center, and traditional guest houses.
"We already have a good sporting infrastructure in Iksan. We will promote thrift National sports festival and it will be a good opportunity for Iksan citizens to show and inspire a new sense of values and citizenship," said the mayor Lee.
The mayor also said, "this will be a meaningful festival where we wrap up our past and go forward to our future. I will do my best to publicize the event."
It was mentioned that Iksan's infrastructure seems to be a little bit disorderly. "The agency in charge of preparation for the games will thoroughly examine the facilities and things will be better. We are going to repair and remodel old facilities. We also have the fund to complete the Iksan and Wanggoong road construction that goes around Wonkwang University before the games," said Lee.
The 99th National Sporting Festival is going to be held in 2018 October and 100,000 people are expected to take part. 12 out of 44 games which are field, soccer, baseball, volleyball, and etc will take place and televised.
