Iksan is chosen to host the 99th National Sports Festival. It has been 15 years since Jeonbuk area held sporting event and Iksan became the first small-medium sized city to hold the national sporting event. It will be a meaningful opportunity to revisit the 100 years of sports history and prepare for the coming 100 years. This special report will focus on the process and preparation of the event over two articles.
The process = Up until now, the national sports festival had mostly been held in big cities because the big cities are accessible and have adequate infrastructure to hold such big events. In order to foster athletes and promote sports and fitness, however, the small and medium sized cities started to hold this event. Generally, provinces were actively involved in selection process while Iksan, which is a city not a province took an initiative and promoted the city as a good place to hold the national event.
Last year, the board of Jeonbuk Sports association voted Iksan as a main city for the sporting event. However, the prospect to hold the event was uncertain because the national committee evaluated that the city need some repair on its facilities.
The city resubmitted the report and became the city to hold the 99th National Sports Festival.
The 99th National Sporting Festival is going to be held in 2018 October and 100,000 people are expected to take part. 12 out of 44 games which are field, soccer, baseball, volleyball, and etc will take place and televised.
Iksan has been investing 569 billion won on improving existing sports facilities in order to live up to its motto "the healthiest city." As a result, it has a good sporting infrastructure compared to other similar sized cities. The budget for the sporting event is expected to be 454 billion won and 103 billion won and 172 billion won will be subsidized by the national and Jeonbuk government respectively. It will still need bigger budget but the city is planning to have a thrift and economical event operation. Some of the middle and high schools in Iksan area will be utilized as venues as well.
The lack of accommodations was the biggest concern during the vote. The mayor told the press that it will utilize Wonkwang University dorms, hotels which will be built as a part of advanced national industrial complex, and for Iksan train transfer center, and traditional guest houses.
