It's been an agonizing 37 years.
Hoon kim, 42, was just four years old when he went missing in 1977. His family visited Yeosan for his grandmother's funeral and he came finally made it home after 37 years.
His mother GeonSoon Park,75, was pregnant and too busy to take care of the kids so she left her oldest kid Jeong Hee Kim, now 44, in charge of Hoom Kim. They were playing together but soon she lost the sight of him. They looked everywhere for the boy but the search was unsuccessful.
His mother was distraught by his disappearance and his family's painful waiting for the boy lasted a long time.
Kim ended up being taken to a childcare facility by an unknown man. He left there when he was 16 because he couldn't stand the harsh environment of the orphanage. He came to Seoul and became a store clerk. Life was very tough for the boy who had no family to depend on.
The story gets even sadder. His father passed away this January due to a car accident without knowing what happened to his son. While filing death certification of his father, Kim's family visited the police station to take Kim's name off the list of the missing person since it has been a long time. They thought they had no hope in finding him.
Iksan Police's missing person's unit obtained a list of people who are looking for their family. They compared every one on the list one by one.
They had a hard time finding him because the family couldn't remember when exactly he went missing. The police showed Kim's picture to the family when he was in the orphanage but failed to recognize Kim.
Finally, the police paid a visit to Kim who is now working in KwangJu. They took his DNA sample and ran a paternity test and it was a match.
The family nervously awaited while the police got Kim to come to Iksan police station. He gave a big hug to his mother who kept saying "I am so sorry." His sister who was sitting by his mother was silently weeping the whole time.
Kim's mother wouldn't let go of Kim's hand. The first thing she wanted to do with her son was to make a nice meal.
Kim said he felt weird to have family so long after he didn't have one. "I want to be a good son and want to share many many stories with them," he said.
At the police station was his uncle Geun Seup Kim. He was very happy to see his long lost niece. "It is a miracle that we found him like this," said the uncle.
Byung Seok Choi the investigative chief said, "it feels so rewarding to find a missing person and have them reunite with their family. Kim grew up to be an excellent member of the society despite all the hardship. We will do our best to make this happen more often."
