Tree market gets ready for Arbor Day
A variety of affordable trees can be purchased directly from growers

April 5th is Arbor Day which is the official day to plant trees and remember how important nature is.
There are more than 250 seedlings including apple trees and persimmon trees in one green house and herbs and blueberries in the other structure at the Iksan Forestry Association in Song Hak Dong.
Many people have already visited this tree market because the association is selling many kinds of trees at an affordable price. Their affordable price is possible because growers are selling directly to customers.
Even though it is a lot cheaper than most places, people didn't feel that much difference in price since the seedlings got more expensive after the typhoons and unusually cold winter last year.
However, people couldn't just leave without buying any trees. An Iksan citizen said, "It is still a lot cheaper than many other places and I would love to see them grow in my garden." He loaded a huge persimmon tree in his car.
An increasing number of farms gave up growing seedlings because they simply couldn't keep up with the rising price of labor and other expenses. The cold winter was another part of the reason many people gave up seedling business.
Before coming out to the market, the seedlings must be grafted and planted for a year or two. Temperature is a key factor in grafting and caring for the seedlings, according to the forestry association.
"We have as many as 150 visitors daily, and the number of visitors is expected to increase around Arbor Day," said Byung Hoe Jeong.
The most popular seedlings are a Japanese Apricot costs 3500 won and up, Daebong is 4500 won and up, and A Chinese Date tree is 8000 won and up at the market and a pawpaw tree and other medicinal shrubs are also popular.
Association employees helps people pick out good seedlings and share tips on growing them.
