한복입고 설교하는 영광, 하나님께 감사
이리남중교회 출신 오정주-제프 부부 남중교회 설교 영문 전문

익산 이리남중교회(목사 강명석)는 지난 12일 미국 LA에서 활동 중인 미국장로교 목회자 제프(Jeffrey Thomas Howard) 씨를 초청, 설교를 가졌다.
제프 씨는 이리남중교회 성도였던 오정주(목회박사)씨의 남편이다. 오 씨는 지난 2001년 미국 유학길에 올라 센프란시스코 신학대학원에서 박사학위를 취득한 재원이다. 다음은 설교 내용이다./편집자주

As come together in the presence of Jesus Christ this evening in worship,
오늘날 예수 그리스도의 임재하심속에서 우리가 예배를 함께 드리게됨을 하나님께 영광과 감사를 드립니다.
you may be wondering why an American is preaching to you in English.
You may also be wondering why this American is wearing a Hanbok.
Well, I have been wondering about these things myself.
But before I attempt an answer lets start by looking at the Word of God.
Our reading tonight comes from the twelfth chapter of Genesis, verses 1-3.
많은 분들이 왜 미국인이 우리 교회에서 설교를 할까 궁금해 할 것입니다. 또한 왜 이 미국인이 한복을 입었을까 궁금해 할 것입니다. 저 자신 또한 이일들에 관하여 궁금하게 생각하였습니다. 그러나 먼저 하나님의 말씀을 살펴보고서 대답을 드리겠습니다.
Read Gen 12:1-3 in English and Korean
창세기 12장 1절에서 3절 말씀입니다.
Will you pray with me?
Holy Spirit, help me this day to preach your mightly Word. Help Jeong Ju as she translates it. And help this congregation to understand what you are speaking to them this evening. We pray this in the strong name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
함께 기도하시겠습니다.
성령님, 하나님의 위대한 말씀을 설교 할 수 있도록 도와주십시요. 정주가 통역을 잘 할 수있도록 도와 주시길 기도합니다. 또한 성도님들께서도 오늘 저녁에 하나님께서 우리들에게 들려주시고 자 하시는 말씀을 잘 이해 할 수 있도록 은헤 주시옵서서. 전능하신 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 기도 올립니다.
God has made a wonderful promise to Abraham and Sarah.
God has promised to bless them, to make their lives wonderful.
But there are conditions on the promise.
Abraham and Sarah must follow God wherever he leads.
They must leave their home and family and go to a new land God show them.
God's promises often come with difficult conditions.
하나님께서 아브라함과 사라에게 위대한 약속을 주셨습니다.
하나님께서 그들에게 큰 민족을 이루고 복의 근원이 되도록 축복하시겠다고 약속하셨습니다. 그러나 약속들에는 조건들이 있었습니다. 아브라함과 사라는 하나님께서 그들을 어디로 인도하시든지 확실히 따라가야만 한다는 것이었습니다. 그들은 가족과 친지들을 떠나서 하나님께서 보여주시는 땅으로 가야만 했습니다. 종종 하나님의 약속은 어려운 조건들과 함께 옵니다.
God's promise to Sarah and Abraham was initiated by God.
This is the way it is suppose to be.
God promises something and we respond.
But for many of us we reverse the process.
We make a promise with God and expect God to respond to us.
Students often pray something like,
"God, if I pass this test I will read the Bible every day for a month"
Workers often pray something like,
"God, if I made just a little more money I could tithe to the church"
We really want God to do something for us.
사라와 아브라함에 주신 약속은 하나님이 시작하신일이십니다.
하나님이께서 먼저 우리에게 약속을 주시는 당연한일입니다.
하나님인가 우리게 먼저 말씀을 주시고 우리가 반응합니다.
그러나 우리들 중 많은사람들 반대적으로 행동합니다.
우리가 먼저 하나님께 약속을 만들고 하나님께서 우리에게 반응하도록 합니다.
학생들은 종종 이렇게 기도합니다.
“하나님, 만일 내가 이 시험에서 합격하면 한달동안 매일 성경을 읽겠습니다.”
일하는 어른들은 종종 기도를 이렇게 합니다.
“하나님, 내가 돈을 조금 만 더 벌며 내가 십일조를 할 것입니다.”
우리는 하나님께서 우리를 위하여 무엇인가를 하기를 간절히 바랍니다.
Many years ago I prayed a prayer like this.
I said, "God if you give me a wife I will follow you wherever you lead."
Now, I was not looking for just an ordinary wife.
I was looking for someone who would lead me to new experiences,
someone whom would motive me to be the kind of man I was created to be.
오래전에 제는 이렇게 기도를 하였습니다.
“하나님 만일 저에게 아내를 주시면 하나님께서 저를 인도하시는데로 어디든지 가겠습니다”
지금생각해보면, 저는 그당시 단지 평범한 아내를 구한것이아니었습니다.
저는 저를 새로운 삶으로 인도해줄 아내를 찿았습니다.
저는 또한 하나님께서 저를 만드신 목적대로 살 수 있도록 저를 격려 해주고 인도해줄 아내를 찿았습니다.
But this prayer remained unanswered for many years.
One Sunday, while in church, I prayed to God for a wife.
God responded with these words, "Its in the book"
I immediately opened a Bible and read this promise to Abraham.
I knew right then and there that God wanted me to dedicate my life to his Word.
그러나 많은 햇수동안 이 기도는 응답되지 않았습니다.
그런데 한 주일날, 교회에서 제가 하나님께 아내를 주십사고 기도하였습니다.
하나님께서 저에게 “ 응답이 성경속에 있다고 말씀하셨습니다”
저는 즉시 성경을 폈고 아브라함에게 한 약속을 읽게 되었습니다.
저는 바로 하나님께서 저에게 하나님 말씀에 제 삶을 드리기를 원하신다는 것을 깨달았습니다.
Over the next three years I studied the Bible as hard as I could.
But God did not send me a wife.
Then for two years I was trained to be a Bible teacher.
But God did not send me a wife.
I taught the Bible for four years to adults in my church.
But God did not send me a wife.
그래서 저는 온 정성을 다하여 성경을 3년 동안 연구했습니다.
그런데 하나님은 저에게 아내를 주지 않았습니다.
그런 다음, 저는 2년동안 성경을 가르치는 선생이 되도록 훈련을 받았습니다.
그러나 하나님은 저에게 아내를 보내 주시지 않았습니다.
저는 제 교회에서 4년동안 성인들에게 성경을 가르쳤습니다.
그래도 하나님은 저에게 아내를 보내주시지 않았습니다
Then I remember that I had promised to follow God wherever he might lead.
So I left my family and friends in Washington DC and move to Los Angeles CA.
There I enrolled at Fuller Theological Seminary.
And I prayed to God to send me a wife.
그런데 저는 제가 하나님을 저를 어디로 인도하시든지 따르겠다고 약속한 것을 기억했습니다. 그래서 저는 워싱던 디시에 있는 가족들과 친구들을 떠나서 켈로포니아에 있는 엘에이에 이사했습니다. 그리고 풀러신학교에 등록했습니다. 그리고 저는 하나님께서 제게 아내를 보내주시라고 기도했습니다.
Then one day I was worshiping at the Pasadena Presbyterian Church.
After the service I noticed a lovely young Korean woman passing our flier.
A few months later this same Korean woman sat down next to me in class.
I told her that I was a Bible teacher and was attend Fuller to become a pastor.
Her name was Oh Jeong Ju.
그런데 어느날 저는 파세디다 장로교회에서 예배를 드리게되었습니다.
그 예배후에 한 사랑스런 젊은 한국 여자가 눈에 띄었습니다
몇 달후에 같은 이 여자가 수업시간 내 옆에 앉았습니다.
저는 워싱턴에 있는 national presbyterian church 성경을 가르치는 사람었고, 풀러 신학교에 목사가 되기위해서 왔다고 말했습니다.
We formed a small group of international students.
These students came from many countries, but most were Korean.
Jeong Ju cooked a delicious Korean meal every week.
I helped them with English and used the Bible to help start conversations.
우리는 유학생을 대상으로 전도를 하여 작은 구룹을 형성했습니다.
이학생들은 많은 나라들로부터 왔지만 한국인이 대부분이었습니다.
정주는 매주 맛있는 한국 음식을 요리했습니다.
저는 유학생들의 영어가 향상되도록 도왔습니다. 성경말씀을 가지고 영어로 대화를 나눌수 있도록 도왔습니다.
The group grew to nearly 20 people
A talented music leader from a church in Seoul arrived and organized a band.
We called it CrossRoads because:
The students came down many different roads that crossed in Pasadena.
And we were all on the same road to Jesus Christ.
그 모임은 거의 20명의 학생의 학생들이 가까이 빨리 들었습니다. 그래서 그리고 음악에 재능있는 한국에서 온 전도사를 중심으로 찬양팀도 구성되었습니다. 그래서 더욱 많은 유학생들과 유학생들의 신앙심을 돕고자 하는 미국인들이 함께 하였습니다. 우리는 이 구룹을 십자로들이라고 불렀습니다.
학생들이 많은 다른 길을 따라서 파세데나에 있는 교차로에서 만난것입니다.
우리 모두는 예수께로 가는 십자로에 있기도 하기때문입니다.
I saw with my own eyes the revelation first seen by John on Patmos,
a great multitude from every nation, tribe, people and language standing before the throne ... worshiping God. (Rev 7:9,11)
Jeong Ju and I worked closely together on the ministry.
I found that I loved Korean culture.
I found that I loved her family.
We fell in love with each other and were married 18 months ago.
I believe that God had answered my prayer.
God had given me the wife I always wanted.
Now is my time to respond.
I had promised God that If he gave me a wife
I would follow him wherever he might lead.
There is a small church in the Eagle Rock section of Los Angeles.
It has a small and aging congregation.
The community around it is filled with new immigrants.
These new immigrants want to learn English and adapt to American culture.
God is calling Jeong Ju and I to pastor this church.
The congregation is ready to help us reach out and help the new immigrants.
The message I will have for this church is that they have been blessed.
So it is time to bless others.
Our dream is to build a multicultural church in Los Angeles.
In this church we hope to see people of all nations and cultures
worshiping Christ together.
When you come to Los Angeles please visit us and worship together.
We hope that through this church all the families of the earth will be blessed.
So why is an American preaching to you this evening in English?
Because I am ready to follow God wherever he might lead.
I never dreamed that I would come to Korea, yet I am in Iksan.
And why am I wearing a Hanbok?
Because this is my way of thanking God and you for sending Jeong Ju to me.
Amen
