KyuHoon Kim, a teacher at Iri technical high school, made it happen. He started working at this high school only this year and made the unpopular wind instrument band a superstar.

The band was forgotten for 25 years. His band won the grand prize at the 39th Korean National Brass Band Competition.

It wouldn’t have been possible if Kim the band teacher hadn’t been there.

He and the school worked closely with the band providing any help the band might need.

The school’s brass band association for alumni, YerimHeo, also helped the students who were practicing hard.

When Kim came to the school, the band had only a few members.

“I thought we could do a lot better than this.

There are many talented kids who are eager to learn and play.

We didn’t have any proper instruments and most importantly there were no teachers to teach these kids so it was hard for them to think about going to a music school.

I started to advertise the band whenever I could and the school and YerimHeo generously donated 50,000,000 to the band.

We purchased new instruments and started working towards a specific goal we set up,” Kim said.

After Kim took charge, everything changed.

Kids who didn’t even know how to play the instrument memorized all the music and were significantly improved.

They voluntarily stayed after school to practice.

“We practiced until 10 every day. We stayed and trained together over the summer. After the summer, we had a little concert for our parents, and they were so surprised and moved that one of the parents came up to me and said thank you. I was very grateful for the change and their support,” added Kim.

Kim and his band will try to win the grand prize again next year.

There are students who even want to go to music school.

“I am very happy that the band motivated kids to do well on everything that they do,” Kim said.
