She is trying to preserve this unique form of traditional music and performance even before it was designated as cultural property.

She established the school in Mah Dong in Iksan out of her own pocket because she thought that it would be nice to have a performance without music while she was working at the Iksan culture center as a performer.

She met up somebody who was in charge of the association and came up with the idea of establishing the school exclusively for Kisaebae.

Soh was awarded with Excellence award at the Chunbuk Art Festival held on June 7th and that drew some attention to Iksan Kisaebae.

Iksan Kisaebae is a performance that represents traditional agricultural culture of the Chunbuk region. It was designated as a Chunbuk intangible cultural asset in 2000.

The performance originated in the Mahan and Bakjae period. 12 towns gather and pray for good harvest and boosts mutual cooperation within the community though the performance. 

The performance consists of a various dances such as YoungHang, DangSan Gout, Kisaebae, Ki nori, and gun moo and Iksan Kisaebae association is trying to develop the performance and turn it over to the next generation.

Kisaebae is a big performance so it required a considerable amount of skills and the man power.

“We dance with the huge flags and we’re worried that guys who can hold on to the flags firmly are getting older,” says one member. People in a various age groups are working together. Soh says, “we have a school so we can practice the performance but there are not many instructors to teach kisaebae and that worries me most. There is nobody who are qualified to teach the performance. We need teachers who can help our students in order to preserve this traditional art form.”
